The Director, Field Excellence and Operations is accountable for 1) ensuring strategic alignment and operational execution of the companies Field-based Medical Team (FBMT) activities, and 2) leading operational efforts to drive annual and longer-term strategic planning and execution of a diverse set of Global Medical Affairs (GMA) activities. This role will drive implementation of various thought leader (TL) initiatives including mapping, and lead development and implementation of FBMT systems and processes (e.g. CRM). This individual will strongly contribute to establishing and/or executing key processes underlying core GMA activities including the establishment, tracking and management of the GMA budget.

Main Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • Field-based Medicine Team (FBMT) Oversight:
    • Responsible for hiring and managing Medical Science Liaisons (MSL) globally (initially via third parties)
    • Lead development of FBMT systems and processes including CRM and insights platform
    • Monitor and report MSL activities globally and ensure alignment with agreed to global key performance indicators
    • Maximize in-field team effectiveness through coaching, development and deployment of appropriate resources
    • Develop and implement TL engagement and development plan with a significant focus on influential clinical investigators
    • Implement training initiatives to improve FBMT competencies and professional development
  • Global Medical Affairs Operations:
    • Manage annual and longer-term strategic planning and goal development and tracking, annual budgets, and information system requirements and associated reporting capabilities
    • Manage budgets and contracting for a variety of GMA activities including grants
    • Develop and manage initiatives to enable the GMA team to operate efficiently and effectively in the context of continuous improvement
    • Plan and manage broader GMA team activities including team meetings, strategic planning, offsites, and team building
    • Contribute to the establishment of GMA policies, business processes and SOPs (as necessary)

Functional Roles:



  • Will collaborate closely across functions including Clinical Development and Clinical Operations, Commercial/Market Access and within Global Medical Affairs (GMA), to support the identification of, and engagement with, a broad range of thought leaders and other key stakeholders within the medical community
  • Will collaborate closely with Finance regarding budget establishment and tracking
  • Extensive engagement with and oversight of external service providers

Additional responsibilities for current encumbent:


Skills, Knowledge & Experience:

  • Advanced degree preferred, with at least 5 years of relevant pharmaceutical/biotech experience including oversight of MSLs
  • Strong knowledge of medical affairs strategy and clinical development/operations matrix
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, ability to present medical/scientific information in a clear and concise manner
  • Experience working with Veeva and/or Salesforce.com for field team performance management and outcome-based reporting
  • Driven, highly self-motivated, confident, high-energy, individual
  • Proven track record of teamwork, innovation, project management and demonstrated ability to manage, lead and mentor individuals
  • Ability to understand and align the needs from global, regional and national perspectives
  • Ability to oversee the creation of strategic, long-range plans that are aligned with strategies across the organization
