Description:

The Senior Director, Medical Communications, will provide the strategic vision and leadership for scientific communications at the company, and will have oversight of and responsibility for insight generation, non-regulatory medical writing, strategic publication planning and execution, medical information and review. Primarily focused on data dissemination activities, the role will also be critical for management of scientific congresses, advisory board meetings and development of field medical materials. This individual will ensure consistency in messaging and data accuracy irrespective of the department in which scientific documents/tools originate.

Main Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • Drive the compilation of data to create scientifically accurate and fair-balanced content that communicates and educates audiences on complex medical and scientific concepts, treatment options, emerging standards of care, and competitive intelligence
  • Ensure the timely development and maintenance of materials for use by the Field-based Medical Team and for other "customer"-facing stakeholders
  • Development of responses to unsolicited requests for medical information from HCPs and the development and maintenance of medical information response documents as necessary (i.e., SRLs, Medicaid Summaries, AMCP Formulary Dossiers)
  • Oversee the planning and execution of publications
  • Ensure successful conference presence, including design and development of medical affairs booths and other supporting materials
  • Implement effective and consistent strategies for engaging external expertise for insight generation
  • Maintain a thorough knowledge the product portfolio and the related therapeutic areas, including disease states, co-morbid medical conditions, and other therapeutic options
  • Oversee medical and promotional review activities in collaboration with Legal, Compliance, and Regulatory colleagues
  • Support implementation of appropriate technologies to support medical communications activities (e.g., Veeva MedComms)
  • Develop Policies, Standard Operating Procedures, Guidelines, or Work Instructions, as necessary
  • Develop and manage medical communications budget
  • Identify and manage consultants and vendors, ensuring production of quality deliverables, on time, and within budget
  • Assist in identifying areas of improvement in process/policy and lead initiatives to enhance operational efficiency

  • Work closely with biostaticians, Clinical Development and Operations, Research, Global Medical Affairs (including HEOR) and other colleagues including senior management to ensure timely collation, interpretation, and reporting of data
  • Work closely with commercial colleagues on congress-related and other communications deliverables as appropriate
  • Jointly oversee medical and promotional material review with colleagues from Legal, Compliance, and Regulatory (may be internal or external)
  • Extensive engagement and oversight of multiple external service providers

Skills, Knowledge & Experience:

  • Advanced scientific degree (PharmD, MD, or PhD) in a life sciences field
  • 7+ years of relevant work experience in the biopharma industry with 3+ years in scientific communications
  • Successful track record of team leadership and project management
  • Excellent medical writing ability, and the ability to understand, analyze/interpret, and summarize highly complex scientific data
  • Experience providing health economics and outcomes information to appropriately communicate with stakeholders involved in evidence-based healthcare decisions
  • Ability to deliver high-quality content in a fast-paced environment
  • Self-motivated, proactive, and ability to collaborate with internal and external stakeholders in a positive, courteous, and professional manner
  • Business acumen with a basic understanding of the pharmaceutical industry and healthcare arena, including relevant regulations
  • High integrity, sense of urgency, willingness to be a "player/coach," an appetite to both individually contribute and to lead within and outside of communications functions, and a willingness to wear multiple hats and be flexible, resourceful
  • 20-40% travel required
